An oxygen bomb calorimeter is a specialized laboratory device used to measure the calorific value (or heat of combustion) of a solid or liquid sample. Essentially, it determines exactly how much energy (calories or Joules) is released when a substance is completely burned in a pure oxygen environment.
It is widely used in food science (to determine nutritional calorie counts), environmental testing, and fuel analysis (coal, oil, etc.).
Why Use an Oxygen Bomb?
– Complete Combustion: Normal burning in open air is often incomplete, leaving soot or carbon monoxide behind, which skews energy calculations. The high-pressure pure oxygen guarantees everything burns completely.
– Constant Volume: Because the steel bomb cannot expand, the reaction happens at a constant volume. This means the energy measured is strictly the change in internal energy ($\Delta U$), which can then be used to calculate enthalpy ($\Delta H$).
